There are a few things that command my attention from a musical artist.  The quality of music written, quality of voice, what “top shelf” artists have already recorded their work and what awards and achievements have they attained.

So, when I was recently introduced to Gordon Chambers’ latest CD, Sincere, I began to check out what this guy was all about.

I know! I know!  Some of you think I know a lot more about music and artists than I really do. I’m hear to tell you, once again, that I don’t.  I’m constantly “discovering” great talent that I should have already been aware of and Gordon Chambers is one of those people. So, call me late to the party but at least I made it!

This incredible, Grammy nominated and winning singer-songwriter has had his work recorded by some of the top names in show business. Folks like Anita Baker, Jamie Foxx, Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, Usher, Aretha Franklin and a whole host of other great names.  Many, many others call him “friend”. 

One of the first things I do when I receive new music – especially music from talent that I’m just learning about – is if there are any covers on the album.  There are a few that I’m always looking for.  One those is the classic Donny Hathaway tune, A Song For You.  If I’m not even familiar with an artist and I see that tune, there’s a good chance that I’ll buy the album without previewing it.  But that was just the beginning of the fun for me.  Chambers nails it in his own signature silky smooth voiced way.  The price of the whole CD is worth paying just for Gordon’s treatment of this classic.

The tremendous, heart-touching, heartwarming Missing You (written by Chambers and originally recorded by Brandy, Tamia, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan for the 1995 Set It Off soundtrack) grabbed me by the heartstrings on the first listen.  Gordon recorded it as a tribute to his late friends and mentors, R&B legends Phyllis Hyman and Gerald Levert.

Another Boomerocity favorite is beautiful Lead Me (The Ocean).  Tastefully full of angst and vulnerability, this cut is Chambers’ own intimate, personal plea for help and guidance from God.  I’ll warn you right now: This cut is destined for repeated hits of the repeat button of whatever player you listen to this on.  It’s that great!

If you love great R&B beautifully sung and brilliantly recorded, then you’ll definitely want to pick up a copy of Gordon Chambers’ Sincere.  You’re going to love it!
