Don't Stop Believin': The Man, the Band, and the Song that Inspired Generations
Author: Jonathan Cain
Publisher: Zondervan
Release Date: May 1, 2018
It should be no surprise that Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” is the most downloaded song of the 20thCentury. With its positive, encouraging, upbeat sound and lyrics, it should come as no surprise.
What also should come as no surprise is that the song’s co-writer – band member, Jonathan Cain – has named his autobiography the same.
Like the song, Don't Stop Believin': The Man, the Band, and the Song that Inspired Generationsis positive, encouraging, and upbeat. Even when Cain shares the intensity of experiencing the Our Lady of the Angels school fire back in 1958 when he was an eight-year-old student at the school. Tragically, ninety-five people perished in that (ninety-two kids and three nuns) and the event, obviously, scarred him to this day. The clarity and intensity that Jonathan shares his feelings and after effects of the fire brings the reader into the experience with him.
The book is chock-full of stories from Cain’s childhood, his days with The Babys, what led to him joining Journey as Gregg Rolie’s replacement, his relationship with each of the band members, the changes in Journey’s personnel, and how the band is still a well-oiled machine today.
Cain also shares his warts-and-all insight into his marriages and how he met his current wife of three years, Pastor Paula White. However, what is remarkable is Jonathan’s transparency relative to sharing his spiritual journey.
No hype. No “dripping Jesus Juice”. Just a plain and simple sharing of his sinner-saved-by-grace and how God loves each of us – not just the rich and famous.
Obviously, Journey fans will want this book. However, I challenge even non-Journey fans to pick up a copy of this book and read it with open eyes and an open heart. I feel confident that most people will be able to relate to Cain’s challenge of his faith and the re-discovery of the love of God. If you buy no other book this year, please buy "Don't Stop Believin': The Man, the Band, and the Song that Inspired Generations".
