Jeff Beck Live In Tokyo

Whether live or on DVD, there is nothing like watching Jeff Beck perform. That is especially the case with the latest DVD offering by the great folks at Eagle Rock Entertainment, “Jeff Beck Live In Tokyo.”

The show features Jeff Beck with his new band performing some brand new, as yet unreleased, material. The set also includes “Stratus,” “Led Boots,” “Cause We Ended As Lovers,” “Big Block,” “A Day In The Life,” “Rollin’ And Tumblin’” and many more.

Jeff Beck is undeniably one of the world’s greatest guitar players. Technically brilliant, he is renowned for pushing musical boundaries and has excelled across many different genres from rock and jazz to pop and blues. His versatility and unmatched musicianship is captured beautifully on “Live In Tokyo.”

Filmed earlier this year (April 9th) at the Tokyo Dome City Hall in Japan, these Japanese dates were the first to feature Jeff Beck’s new backing band of Jonathan Joseph (drums), Nicolas Meier (guitars) and Rhonda Smith (bass).

Ms. Smith’s bass work is nothing short of amazingly remarkable. So much so that I’m beginning to investigate what else she’s worked on – she’s that good.  Beck shows his comfort in his own abilities by having someone like Meier along with him as wing man on guitar. Beck gives Meier lots of spotlight and is a pure delight to watch and listen to. He reminds a lot (in some ways) of World guitarist, Steve Oliver. Dig into this guy. He’s scary good!

The set list includes some freshly minted songs that fans will never have heard before. In contrast to Beck’s previous visual releases, Performing This Week…Live At Ronnie Scott’s and Rock ‘N’ Roll Party (Eagle Rock Entertainment), which both filmed in small clubs, Live In Tokyo is filmed in a major concert arena and has a very different, more expansive feel.

The Boomerocity favorites on this performance are “Hammerhead,” Beck’s treatment of the Beatles’ “A Day In The Life,” and, “Why Give It Away” (from his new EP, “Yosogai”). While the two former tunes have been recorded before and seen all over YouTube, fans will love hearing and seeing the latter performed. It’s absolutely amazing!

A true guitar legend, Jeff Beck is captured showcasing new and classic material with equal aplomb on Live In Tokyo. It is a great addition to Eagle Rock’s live Jeff Beck collection. It is a great addition to Eagle Rock’s live Jeff Beck collection.
