One thing that Boomerocity LOVES is being pleasantly and surprisingly introduced to talent we’ve not heard before – especially if they’ve been around for a while. Such is the case with “maverick pop-rock troubadour”, Tom Fuller.
If you read nothing else from this review, read these two bullet points:
- 1. Boomerocity LOVES, LOVES, LOVES Tom Fuller’s “Waterfall”. We really, truly do!
- 2. Buy it.
This is one of those kinds of albums that sound “classic” while having the freshness of being totally new music. Well written. Well played. Well sung. Well recorded. The whole package.
If I were to pick a song that would serve as a calling card on this disc, it would be his Beatle-esque song, “Rainbowtastic”. It literally put a huge smile on my face when it started playing. Think: Penny Lane on steroids.
Yeah, it’s that good.
“As a songwriter, the challenge for me is always ‘How do I tell a story that sparks universal imagination?’” says Fuller, who reveals the deeply personal inspiration behind “Waterfall.” “I wrote it coming out of a difficult relationship, and it’s about the never-ending love I have for my daughter. We’re often separated by long distances, but I miss her greatly. The song represents the waterfall of life flowing down to places unknown, but at the same time you know you're going to be OK on the other side. The rainbow I write about is one that leads to our hearts. It's the ride of my life."
During his career, Fuller has performed all over the world with top bands and artists including Little Feat, Soul Asylum, Blues Traveler, Rusted Root and Robin Trower, among many others. On his four previous albums, the panoramic vision of Tom Fuller’s music has made him a favorite of audiences and critics alike, but he considers Waterfall his crowning achievement. “My main goals for the album were to be heard, to belong and to inspire others. I want people to feel like they were on my journey, riding the waterfall of life, and to become emotionally charged and transformed.” He laughs, then adds, “And I want them to say, 'Wow, that was really, really good and I can relate. Let's play it again!'"
Boomerocity has interviewed Tom. The chat will give you some additional insight and a personal feel for who Tom is. We consider him a friend now and look forward to many more years of music from him!
