Full disclosure: Trav is one of my first cousins, Travis King. I love him dearly. That said, that should not shade my review of his debut solo, self-titled album, Trav.
Yeah, he’s family but I tend to expect more from family just as I know that they expect more from me. And to that point, Cousin Travis more than delivers. He excels!
This five song offering totally surprised me - not only because I didn’t know that he was anywhere close to releasing it but at the impressive quality of the songwriting, vocals, musicianship, and recording. I had no idea that all that talent resided in one family member.
You’d think the boy would share some with me . . . but NOOOOO! All kidding aside, I'm incredibly proud of my cousin.
The following are the songs along with my comments about them.
Driving & Praying
How many of you have been driving alone and just use the time to pray to our Maker? I find that’s where my best communion takes place. Such seems the case with Trav as the song is a a heartfelt chat with our Creator as he drives the roads of East Tennessee. At about 1:24 into the song, gears are shifted into high gear and into gut wrenching, raw pleas to be heard. You’ll be hard-pressed to obey the speed limit if you’re listening to this while driving. You’ve been warned. This song is the first song released from this collection and can be heard here.
It’s All My Fault
Is a song of genuine contriteness when a relationship goes sideways and schisms are formed. The wisdom of the words show that when such things happen - and one knows full well one’s own responsibility for it - then owning it and confessing it to the wronged one is the first, bold step towards real, meaningful reconciliation. This song nails that truth.
Good, Good Love
Knowing a bit of Travis’s story and his happy marriage to his lovely bride, Carla, this song - with it’s Keith Urban vibe - is, by far, my favorite song of this collection. Soft. Raw. Vulnerable. Thankfulness for one’s God-given mate. Not only are these the attributes of the song but also the ingredients for a solid relationship. I love this song!
Someone
Another great, hard driving love song. Again, knowing Travis’ story, this song brings a huge smile to my heart to hear him happy in life and in love via his mate who has obviously checked off all the boxes of all the things he didn’t even know he needed in a mate. Very cool. Oh, and the musicianship on this song really reached out and grabbed me by the throat (and heart).
Take A Look Around
Cuz exhibits his incredible vocal range on this. Such talent . . . and I hate ‘im for it! Ha! Ha! It’s a song of warning for people to open their eyes, get real, and get right. A wise but contrary message to what we are persistently bombarded with in these divisive times. Again, the musicianship on this song is phenomenal. This song is the second song to be released.
These songs are being released one at a time on Apple Music and all the other major music streaming platforms. Keep an eye on Trav for the future releases.
