BOSTON Celebrates 50 Years of Its Landmark Debut Album With Deluxe Anniversary Editions

Fifty years after “More Than a Feeling” helped change the sound of rock radio, BOSTON’s landmark debut album is getting a golden-anniversary treatment worthy of its legacy.

Released on August 25, 1976, Boston became one of those rare albums where the songs didn't simply become hits — they became part of the soundtrack of a generation.

“Foreplay/Long Time.”

“Hitch a Ride.”
“Something About You.”
“Let Me Take You Home Tonight.”

For Baby Boomers who were there when the album arrived, just reading those titles can practically make the opening guitar riffs start playing in your head.

And the numbers behind the album are equally remarkable: more than 20 million in sales and 2 billion streams, according to the 50th-anniversary announcement.

But BOSTON's debut was more than a collection of radio hits.

At the center of it all was Tom Scholz, whose meticulous approach to writing, recording and production helped create a massive, layered sound that seemed made for arenas. The anniversary announcement describes Scholz's vision as instrumental in the development of what became arena rock and notes that the album's influence continues half a century later.

Going Back to the Beginning

For the album's 50th anniversary, Impex Records is working directly with Scholz on new deluxe editions that don't merely BOSTON 50th Anniversary One Sheet Croppedrepackage the original record.

The centerpiece is a 180-gram two-LP set, with the original album presented at 33⅓ RPM and a second record devoted to original demos at 45 RPM.

And those demos may be the real treasure for longtime BOSTON fans.

The collection will include a selection of the legendary early recordings restored by Scholz while being kept in their original sonic state. That will allow listeners to hear early versions of songs such as “Rock N' Roll Band,” “More Than a Feeling” and “Peace of Mind” and compare them directly with the finished recordings that became rock-radio staples.

The package has been mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering and will include a deluxe tip-on gatefold jacket, heavy stock, a tipped-in booklet, carefully curated photography — including images appearing in print for the first time — and a new interview with Scholz conducted by Chuck Granata.

A 50th Anniversary Gold Edition, pressed on pearl-gold vinyl, will be limited to 2,500 individually numbered copies and will include an exclusive BOSTON guitar pick and poster.

A stereo SACD/Hybrid edition is also planned. The anniversary releases are currently listed for availability during the second quarter of 2027.

Fifty Years — and Still More Than a Feeling

There are albums we remember because they contain a song we loved.

Then there are albums that immediately take us back to a particular time and place.

Boston is one of those records.

Fifty years after that spaceship first appeared on record-store shelves, those opening notes of
“More Than a Feeling” can still transport a generation back to 1976.

And maybe that's the real measure of a classic.

The years go by.

The music doesn't.

Look up, thank God, and keep smiling. It’s going to be okay. It really is.
