There’s a favorite saying on t-shirts worn by baby boomers that goes I may be old, but I got to see all the good bands.

I’m old but I didn’t get to see all the good bands – at least not back in the day. Some I’ll never be able to see. Thankfully, we have the treasure of audio/video recording of some of the great bands and artists from back in the day and we primarily have Mercury Studios to thank for one of the largest libraries of such recordings.

Rainbow is one such band recorded who we won’t ever be able to see – at least not in the configuration of Ritchie Blackmore, Dave Stone, Bob Daisley (all three still alive and well as of this writing), the late Cozy Powell (who passed in 1998) and the late Ronnie James Dio (who passed in 2010.

However, again thanks to Mercury Studios, we have that great band all back together in “Rainbow Live In Munich 1977” and wow! What an incredible rock and roll treasure this is! Available in all of its remastered glory in a 2 CD/1 DVD package, we are audio-visually brought back to those glorious days of rock and roll yesteryear . . . and to the meaning of the aforementioned t-shirt.

This incredible package has it all: incredible, legendary talent in the form of some of the most trailblazing figures in rock and roll. Watching and listening to this treasure trove reminds baby boomers (and educates later generations) as to why we think – strike that – why we KNOW that we had all the great bands.

All you must do is peruse the setlist shown below to be tempted to watch and listen to this. Doing so you’ll learn what made Ritchie Blackmore among the most revered and iconic guitarist ever in the history of rock and roll.

Doing you, you’ll learn why Ronnie James Dio became practically idolized because of his otherworldly vocals formed and ordained for a life and legacy in rock and roll.

Doing so, we clearly see why Cozy Powell was one of the most sought-after drummers in rock and roll. Not only did he play in Rainbow, but he also played with Jeff Beck, Black Sabbath, Michael Schenker Group, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Gary Moore, Whitesnake, Graham Bonnet, and Brian May. Yeah, he was that great.

Doing so, we see how Bob Daisley is still one of the most sought-after rock bassists in the genre, having also played with Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Ozzy Osbourne, Gary Moore, and Chicken Shack.

Finally, in doing so, we hear why – though one of the most underrated, understated rock keyboardists in the genre. Masterful, intricate, and intuitive while working with other top shelf musicians. All you must do is watch and listen to this performance to validate this claim.

Want an example? Watch “Catch The Rainbow”.

I rest my case.
